Malawi’s Journey in the Global Peace Index

In a small but beautiful country in Southern Africa, known for its warm-hearted people and breathtaking landscapes, something unexpected happened in 2024. Malawi, a nation that had always been considered peaceful, found itself dropping 12 places in the Global Peace Index, moving from 67th place in 2023 to 79th place in 2024.

People in the villages and cities began to wonder, “Why did our ranking drop?” After all, Malawi was still among the top 15 most peaceful countries in Africa, standing proudly at 11th place in the region. But something had changed.

The Global Peace Index, which measures peace in 163 countries, looks at things like crime, political stability, conflicts, and military spending. In previous years, Malawi had done well. But in 2024, signs of rising crime, economic struggles, and political tensions started to show. Some communities faced increased theft, while others experienced disagreements between political groups.

Elders in the villages sat under mango trees, discussing how life had changed. Business owners in the cities worried about rising costs of goods, which made people more frustrated and desperate. Families who once felt safe began locking their doors earlier in the evening.

Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, countries like Iceland continued to lead as the most peaceful nation, while Afghanistan remained the least peaceful. In Africa, Mauritius held onto its title as the most peaceful country on the continent.

But Malawians are known for their resilience. As discussions continued, leaders and communities started thinking of ways to bring back peace. Strengthening security, supporting businesses, and solving political disagreements became important topics. The people of Malawi knew that, just like a farmer nurtures his crops after a tough season, their beloved country could regain its position as one of Africa’s most peaceful nations.

And so, with hope and determination, the journey to restore Malawi’s peace and ranking began.
