The High Court sitting in Blantyre will on Friday, September 10, 2021, deliver its verdict in the case involving business tycoon, Thompson Mpinganjira who is accused of attempting to bribe a panel of five judges sitting as a constitutional court (Con-Court), who was hearing the 2019’s presidential elections case.
This is according to a letter dated September 7, 2021, signed by the registrar of the high and supreme court, Gladys Gondwe that has further said the judgment will be passed at 10:00 in the morning.
According to the letter, High Court Judge Dorothy DeGrabriele who has been hearing the case is the one who is expected to pass the judgment.
Thomson Mpinganjira was arrested by the country’s graft-bursting body, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in January last year after it received the complaint on the bribery attempt from the judges who allege that he (Mpinganjira) wanted them to favor one of the respondents in the case that was between former president Peter Mutharika and Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) vs Saulos Chilima as the first petitioner and Lazarus Chakwera as the second petitioner.
The two went to court to fight the legitimacy of the then-presidential election results in which according to Mec, Peter Mutharika won but the Con-court nullified it.
Thomson Mpinganjira is the first Malawian to own a financial holding institution that is currently owning FDH Bank.
